Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the purpose of this event?
Orem Reads is designed, in an era of declining reading rates, to engage the community in literature. The variety of programs, from discussions to performances, is planned with the intent in getting people excited about books, authors, and ideas.

2. Is the Library offering free books this year?
Copies of Gilead by Marilynne Robinson will be given away at Orem Reads events starting with the September 29th kickoff until copies are gone. Because of demand, the Library will limit the book to one copy per household.

3. Is there a charge to participate in Orem Reads?
No, because of the generous support of our many contributors, all exhibits and events are offered to the public free of charge.

4. Will State Licensure Credit be offered for Utah Educators?
Yes. To receive one unit (15 hours) Utah educators can choose among the many events the library will be hosting. For each event (most run 90 minutes) the participant must sign the roll and submit a reflective essay detailing insights learned and how this new material will be applied in the classroom setting. To receive one unit you must attend 10 events. Come to the first session on September 29th and identify yourself as an educator attending the series for credit, fill out a short form, and we will take care of the rest. There is no tuition charge or fees, very little homework, and no required texts to buy. It is our sincere hope you will take what you have learned and use it in your classrooms, and encourage your students to attend. For more information contact Marilee Clark at 229-7247.

5. Can I bring my children?
While all of the events will be informative and engaging, we strongly encourage parents to carefully read the event descriptions or contact the General Reference area at 801-229-7175 for assistance in determining which events will be most suitable for your family. Events such as Resonance Story Theatre and Steffani Raff are specifically designed for all age groups.

6. Do I need to attend all of the events?
While all the events have a common theme, each session is independent. We are certain you will find every session enjoyable and enlightening.

7. How can I check out materials on the reading lists?
All of the materials listed are available at the Orem Public Library. There is a small fee for video checkout of $1/week. You just need to use your Orem or registered Provo library card.

8. What hours are the Orem Library exhibits open?
The exhibits are open 9am to 9pm Monday-Friday and from 9am to 6pm on Saturday.

9. How long does the program run?
The Orem Big Read events run September 29 through October 20, 2011. For more information please click here to view our calendar of events.

10. How do I reserve copies of Gilead for my book group?
The Library purchased two sets of Gilead, and one set of Housekeeping to add to the Orem Library's Book Group Collection. Please call General Reference at 801-229-7175 to check on availability for these sets. Members of book groups are also invited to attend an event and receive their own personal copy of Gilead free of charge.

11. My question wasn't answered. How do I get more information?
Please contact us at the Orem Library. Try Program Librarian Eliot Wilcox at 801-229-7174, Associate Librarian Marilee Clark at 801-229-7247 or General Reference at 801-229-7175.
